Alpine Magic: Maddy & Ethan’s Snowy Estes Park Proposal at Lily Lake

There is something about the air in the Rocky Mountains that makes every moment feel a bit more grand. When Ethan reached out to me about documenting his Estes Park proposal to Maddy, I knew Lily Lake would be the perfect backdrop for their next chapter.

A Meaningful Mountain Setting

Lily Lake is one of those rare spots that offers 360-degree views of the jagged peaks and the iconic Longs Peak without requiring a massive trek. For Maddy and Ethan, this wasn’t just a beautiful location—it was a place that held deep meaning for both of them.

As a photographer, my goal for any Estes Park proposal is to let the scenery emphasize the emotion of the moment. The scale of the mountains serves as a reminder of how big and enduring a commitment like this really is. When Ethan dropped to one knee, the wind stilled, the mountains glowed in the soft light, and the rest of the world seemed to fade away.

The Raw Emotion of a Surprise

The beauty of a surprise proposal lies in the honesty of the reaction. Maddy’s surprise was pure and deeply emotional, a testament to the life they’ve built together and the adventures they have yet to take.

After the big “yes,” we spent the afternoon wandering the edge of the water, soaking in that post-engagement glow against the backdrop of the Rockies. It was the perfect example of why I love documenting love in Colorado—the landscape is vast, but the moments we find within it are so beautifully intimate & filled with variety.

Why Lily Lake?

One of the reasons I love recommending a Lily Lake location for an Estes Park proposal is its incredible accessibility without sacrificing the “wow” factor. Unlike many high-alpine spots that require miles of hiking, Lily Lake features a flat, easy-to-navigate trail that encircles the water. It offers lovely views of the surrounding peaks immediately upon arrival.

It’s a fantastic hidden gem that feels much less crowded than the more famous Bear Lake area. Logistically, it’s a breeze: there is a dedicated parking lot right at the trailhead, and it’s only about an hour’s drive from Denver. This makes it an ideal spot for couples who want the epic Rocky Mountain aesthetic without the logistical stress of a backcountry expedition.

Looking Ahead

The best part of this story? It’s only just beginning. I am beyond excited to announce that I’ll be heading back to the mountains this April, June & October to document a few elopements! Being part of these days for my couples is such an honor & I am giddy to watch them say their vows in the fresh mountain air!
